BREAKING: Decision of the Amfissa Judicial Council rejecting the request for the release of hunger striker G.Michailidis

Today 20/6 the Judicial Council of Amfissa rejected the request for release of fellow hunger striker Giannis Michailidis. The Judicial Council of Amfissa and the judges Konstantinos Mandavinos, Ioannis Gatzias and Smaragda Moraiti signed with their dirty hands the attempt to exterminate our comrade. Next to their name the word executioner will carry with it the stigma that must accompany them for the rest of their miserable lives.

The Amfissa Judicial Council has carried out part of a wider repressive plan to deal with our comrade’s hunger strike. Systematic silencing by the mainstream media, bureaucratic delay of the response in order to damage and exhaust the striker, rejection of the application at a time when he is in a critical condition in the Lamia Hospital. The punitive mechanism and its illusion of its penitentiary character collapse in the face of the fierce resistance of the prisoners where they consciously choose to stand up against the conformity, discipline and compromise that domination tries to impose.
Comrade Giannis Michailidis, without renouncing his political identity, without signing statements of repentance, is fighting a long and difficult struggle for his freedom against the special regime of exception that the judicial process, bourgeois justice, has formed. Prison is a mechanism of coercion, the ultimate mechanism of control and recording, a system of surveillance and extermination, of forced transformation of character, but Giannis has endured.

Greece: 11th of June Georgia Voulgari and Thanos Xatziagkelou Begin of symbolic Hunger Strike in Solidarity with Anarchist Comrade G. Michailidis

The dictatorship of confinement is the mirror of democracy. It is the morbid representation of a tyranny that is not content with its military victories. It wants to see those who subjugate bend, sink into deprivation and decline. See in the faces of the captives that laughter disappears and misery occupies its place. Power builds common pits of souls to bury the voices of the invisibles in the concrete.
And yet some still scream. They shout strongly over injustice, inequality, arbitrariness. They shout for freedom and their voices break the concrete, cut the cables and travel free like birds in the sky. They contemplate the meanness of this world and from its proud height they fall as rays on the heads of the lords.
Comrade Giannis Michailidis belongs to these voices. A disobedient fighter both outside and within the walls. Uncompromising with the claim of confinement to this day. Humble as a personality as much as an enemy of exploitation, our comrade condenses in his journey the meanings that we are called today to defend collectively. Revolutionary conscience against submission, self-denial against self-interest, the sharpening of the fight against disarmament and generalized resignation.

“After 8.5 years in prison, after all these arbitrary actions against me, I decided to put an end to my 11 years of suffering, by putting up a mound against the practice of preventive imprisonment, or else the additional punishment of escape with legal loopholes. After 5 more months of preventive detention, I am starting a hunger strike for my release. This choice, with the deep motivation of the much desired freedom, I intend to support it with the same consistency that I have supported my choices so far and for which they are avenging me.”

Throughout his life, Giannis Michailidis, has been an integral part of the struggles against the state and capital from an anarchist perspective. He participated from a young age in anarchist student groups, in demonstrations against the Iraq war, in anti-state/anti-capitalist demonstrations of the 2004-2006 anti-globalisation movement and was arrested during the conflicts. He participated in the 2006-2007 student struggles against the reactionary reforms in higher education (privatization of universities, abolition of university asylum, etc.). He fought against the plundering of nature and was arrested in an intervention against the deforestation of Mount Parnitha in 2007. He was an integral part of the December uprising, when police officers murdered in cold blood the anarchist 16-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos in the Exarchia area. He was present in the battles against the memoranda in 2012 and chose to expropriate the bloody wealth of the banks, remaining steadfastly committed to the vision of the overthrow of the state and capital, holding a militant – feisty stance, against the police-judicial complex, the material expression of state terrorism. The construction of the metro station on Exarchia square and the redevelopment of Strefi Hill are expected to start during the summer months, according to reports in the mainstream media, but also according to notifications by the Municipality of Athens to shops located in the square.

The government’s ultimatum is the final blow to the character of the historic neighborhood of Exarchia. The construction of a Metro stop on the square, the conversion of the Polytechnic school into a museum, the attempted eradication of the monument of Alexandros Grigoropoulos through the construction of luxury apartment buildings on Mesologgiou Street, the surrender of Strefi Hill to private interests (which includes the cementing of the park’s paths, cutting down trees, placing cameras, gates and security posts to control the entrance) are part of the overall designs for the gentrification of the area, the transformation of the neighborhood into a tourist destination, the development of control and repression.

The displacement of the most impoverished people is a consequence of gentrification, since finding housing is rendered impossible due to the increase in rents, spread of airbnb and the onslaught of investment companies. The process of gentrification is normality for the State and Capital, while it is a violent process of uprooting for those connected to the area as they are forced to leave it. Today, the 23rd day of comrade Giannis Michailidis hunger strike, his morning measurements were as follows:

Oxygen: 95

Pulse: 67

Pressure:10 and 7

Blood sugar: 61

Weight:62.6 kg (loss of more than 10% of his original body weight)

The companion is currently (Tuesday 14/6,23rd day) in prison. He was not kept in hospital at the moment. He is awaiting the results of the analytical tests later today. It is obvious that yesterday’s transfer was detrimental to his health. There will be a detailed update later with the test results from the hospital.

Comrade Giannis Michailidis, after 11 years of suffering arrest warrants and fabricated files due to solidarity relations, multiple detentions, torture, convictions for “individual terrorism”, arbitrary deprivation of regular and educational leave, has been in preventive detention for 5 months. Against this latest method, the comrade started a hunger strike on 23/5, raising a barricade against the practice of preventive imprisonment, starting a struggle that, apart from his release, is directly aimed against the regime of exemption of combative prisoners, highlighting the necessity of the overall struggle against power.

In the midst of the presented supremacy of the state and the attack that it has unleashed against the neighborhood of Exarchia, we decided to send a signal of minimal solidarity to comrade Giannis Michailidis, by attacking the riot squad in Ch.Trikoupis street. Solidarity with the anarchist Giannis Michailidis – On hunger strike since 23/5/22

Anarchist prisoner in Malandrinos prison Giannis Michailidis started a hunger strike on 23/5 demanding that his request for release be accepted. While he has served his entire sentence (8.5 years in the cells of democracy) and according to the laws of civil justice he is entitled to be released from prison, the responsible judicial council rejected the 1st application for his permanent release on the grounds that he is “liable to commit new offences” and the 2nd application is still under consideration with the prosecution having recommended against it.

Determined and consistent for years in the struggle against state power, capitalist brutality and all forms of exploitation, he has fought battles through his participation in social struggles and in guerrilla action groups. Present in every form of struggle that promotes rebellion and resistance to power, he has been in practical solidarity with those who have experienced the brutality and vindictiveness of repression. Having been ineffectively accused of a number of baseless cases (robbery in Paros, joining the C.C.F.) and convicted, among others, of the “crime” of robbing a bank, and having managed to escape from the hellholes of democracy (an act for which he has served his legal “debt”), he remains a proud revolutionary without ever signing statements of repentance for his actions and choices. It is obvious, therefore, why the Amfissa magistrates’ court is refusing him the permanent dismissal to which he is entitled.

In view of the court of appeal of D. Chatzivasiliadis and V. Stathopoulos, on 14 May, a march in solidarity with our anarchist comrades was planned, starting from Monastiraki Area . During the march, on Stadiou street at the height of Benaki street, riot police attacked it and managed to break it by throwing chemicals. The riot squads that immediately took over immediately made 14 detentions, of which 5 were arrested with 4 of them being misdemeanor arrests and one felony. The felony charge was the possession/use of a molotov, which only resulted from the testimony of a cop without any evidence. This move is their only way to cover up the unabated use of force during the march.

Thus, on Sunday 21/05 a group of people chose to attack the riot police parked in front of the PASOK offices (political party) in Ch. Trikoupis street with the use of coctail molotovs in response to the repressive forces.

We do not intend to dwell on yet another great political analysis of what is happening today. The time for that is over. All that remains now is our actions. This life is not sustainable. A large part of society knows it and is finding out more and more each day, even if it tries to ignore it or put the blame elsewhere. Pandemic, war, impoverishment. Economic crises on top of economic crises. Depravation of life. The State and capital march unmolested and trample our lives. They have declared war on us. We simply respond with the means at our disposal. We know who stands against us. The State and its minions, the petty bourgeoisie, the nouveau riche, the bosses. We are coming for you! We will attack you until the cops are forced to guard every house, every shed, every car.

But we come these days for another reason. Comrade Giannis Michailidis is on his 16th day of a hunger strike demanding his release. The State vindictiveness he is facing has to do with the unrelenting attitude he has taken all these years inside and outside prison. He is part of an all-out attack launched by the neoliberal Greek State, trying to crush everything that goes against it and stifle all revolutionary memory. On Monday 23/5 comrade C. Michailidis started a hunger strike for his release. After 8.5 years of imprisonment, the comrade remains incarcerated as according to the Amfissa Plenary Council, he does not meet the “essential” conditions for release.

Essentially, the State is creating a regime of exception for political prisoners, attempting to neutralize those who are struggling and at the same time suppress any form of anarchist action. On Tuesday 31/5, as a minimal action of solidarity with the comrade, we wrote some slogans and put up a banner in Agia Paraskevi area of Athens

As part of the nationwide day of action, a solidarity gathering for Giannis Michailidis was held in Thessaloniki with the participation of more than 70 comrades.

During the intervention, Tsimiski Street was blocked several times at the level of Navarino street and hundreds of texts were handed out to passing drivers and residents of the area.
